CWVWP Welcomes New Director Maggie Luma

CWVWP Welcomes New Director Maggie Luma

The Central West Virginia Writing Project (CWVWP) recently welcomed its newest director, Maggie Luma, while celebrating the leaders who have helped shape the project’s history and continued success.

Joining Maggie for this special occasion were three influential leaders who have contributed to CWVWP’s legacy over the years:

  • Fran Simone – Founding Director of West Virginia’s first National Writing Project chapter in 1978, published author, and Professor Emeritus at Marshall University.
  • Jo Blackwood – Founding Co-Director of the Writing Project, retired Kanawha County high school teacher, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Charleston.
  • Barbara O’Byrne – Most recent Director of CWVWP at Marshall University and recently retired Literacy Coordinator for Marshall University’s College of Education and Professional Development.

Throughout its history, CWVWP has remained committed to the belief that teachers of writing should also be writers themselves. This philosophy, along with the dedication of its leaders, has helped build a supportive community of educators across West Virginia.

CWVWP extends its appreciation to Fran, Jo, and Barbara for their years of leadership, dedication, and contributions to the project. As Maggie begins her role as director, CWVWP looks forward to continuing its mission of supporting teachers, encouraging writing, and strengthening educational communities throughout the state.

We look forward to this exciting new chapter in CWVWP’s history!
