Graduate and Professional School Admission Exams

The Marshall University Testing Center administers a number of exams which are required for admission to graduate and/or professional schools. These exams are provided nationwide by organizations such as American College Testing (ACT) and the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Marshall University is a test center for the GRE, the PRAXIS, and the MAT (see below). Registration and scoring for the GRE and the PRAXIS is handled by the national testing agencies.

GRE

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a national testing program, administered by ETS, and is required for admission into a variety of graduate programs, including most programs at Marshal University.

The GRE® Revised General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.

LSAT

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a half-day standardized test required for admission to all ABA-approved law schools and many non-ABA-approved law schools. The test provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants. The test is administered four times a year at hundreds of locations around the world.

MAT

The MAT (Miller Analogies Test) is a high-level mental ability test requiring the solution of problems stated as analogies, and is accepted for admission into a variety of graduate programs, including Education. The MAT is scheduled to be discontinued after November 2023. Marshall will offer the MAT while it is available, and we will continue to accept current MAT scores after the exam is discontinued. Official score reports will be available from Pearson through November 2025.

Praxis

The Praxis Test Series (Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers) is administered nationwide by ETS. Marshall University is a test center for the Praxis Examinations.
