Plan of Study

Each degree-seeking student at the master’s or doctoral level is required to develop a “Plan of Study” with his or her graduate advisor. The Plan of Study is a student’s “blueprint” for completing degree requirements. A student’s certification for graduation depends on the completion of the Plan of Study.

Key points to know:

  • The Plan of Study should list all the courses that will count towards degree requirements.
  • The Plan of Study should not list any courses that do not satisfy degree requirements. Also see the section “Repeating Courses” in the Graduate Catalog.
  • Each program or college may have its own form for reporting a Plan of Study.
  • Your college will make sure that your Plan of Study is accurately reflected in Degree Works.
  • In order to receive Financial Aid for a course, it must satisfy degree requirements. This requirement is known as “Course Program of Study” or “CPOS”. Learn how to Check the CPOS status of your courses.
  • If changes are made to the Plan of Study, the student’s advisor must report those changes to the appropriate dean’s office.

A Plan of Study approved by the department/program must be submitted for approval to the appropriate dean before the student registers for his or her 12th semester hour. Students who fail to do so will have a hold placed on subsequent enrollment.
