School of Theatre to present ‘Our Town’

The Marshall University School of Theatre and Dance will present Our Town, by Thornton Wilder, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9-12 and Nov. 16-19 in the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center’s Francis-Booth Experimental Theatre. There also is a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. on Nov. 12.

Our Town tells the story of two families in the small town of Grover’s Corners in three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Eternity.” Performed with minimal props and sets, the play portrays the daily lives of the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry and — in one of the most well-known scenes in American theatre – pass away.

Marshall Theatre Professor Jack Cirillo is directing Our Town and said this particular play has been a part of his life as long as he’s been working in American theatre.

“It is my north star, my gold standard and the reason why I love the art form so much,” Cirillo  said. “And it is, in my estimation, one of the best plays ever written. Like most great works, the beauty of this play is in its simplicity.”

Cast members include Michael Martin, Caelum Burgess, Noah Ritchie, Kendra Williams, Nikki Riniti, Jimi Lee, Gavin Spiewak, Sierra Lutz, Menis Ketchum, Eliza Aulick, Seth Cunningham, Samantha Phalen, Camden Gleason, Harper Aulick and Ruben Artiles.

Tickets are free for students with a valid MU ID, $20 for general admission, and $15 for seniors age 60 and older and for Marshall employees. For tickets, call 304-696-ARTS.

The production is sponsored by the School of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Media.
