The luncheon will be on the arena floor of the University of Charleston Innovation Center and will celebrate the Smiths’ commitment to youth development, leadership and community service.
Presented annually, the Good Scouter Award recognizes individuals who exemplify the values outlined in the Scout Oath and Scout Law through their professional accomplishments, personal integrity and dedication to serving others.
“Brad and Alys Smith have dedicated years of service, leadership and generosity to creating stronger communities and expanding opportunities for young people,” said Scout Executive Jeffrey L. Purdy. “Through their commitment to education, entrepreneurship, leadership development and outdoor experiences, they embody the values of Scouting and inspire future generations to lead with character and purpose.”
Purdy said the Smiths have championed initiatives that build resilience, self-awareness, confidence, healthy development and civic engagement among youth.
Brad Smith is widely recognized for his leadership in Silicon Valley and for serving 11 years as CEO of Intuit. He now serves as the 38th president of Marshall University and is the first alumnus to lead the university in that role.
Alys Smith is a successful mediator and trial attorney who serves as a Guardian ad Litem, advocating for the best interests of children in abuse and neglect cases.
Together, through their Wing 2 Wing Foundation, the Smiths have supported numerous organizations and boards focused on empowering young people and strengthening communities.
“This recognition is incredibly meaningful because Scouting represents so many of the values that guide our family,” Brad Smith said. “We are grateful for the many mentors, educators and volunteers who continue to invest in young people and create opportunities for them to succeed.”
Alys Smith said Scouting is an organization Wing 2 Wing is pleased to support because of its impact on young people and communities.
“One of the greatest responsibilities we share as adults is helping guide children and adolescents as they discover their strengths, build confidence and learn the value of compassion and leadership,” said Alys Smith. “Scouting plays an important role in shaping young people into thoughtful and capable individuals, and I am deeply honored to receive an award that reflects those ideals.”
The Buckskin Council encourages community members, business leaders and supporters of youth development to attend the Friends of Scouting Leadership Luncheon and participate in the organization’s ongoing mission to support the healthy development of young people across the region.
