Students at Marshall are constantly exposed to the latest technology and trends by the CIT department’s award-winning faculty, making them immediately employable upon graduation. The bachelor of science program also has dedicated computer labs with modern hardware for students to use.

A major in computer and information technology provides bachelor of science graduates with the necessary tools and skills to succeed in today’s global, technology-driven world. Students must choose to specialize in an area of emphasis, which allows them to enrich their studies in a focused discipline. These areas of emphasis include Game and Simulation Development and Computer and Web Application Development.

CIT 416 - Advanced Web Programming
Includes topics in XHTML, JavaScript Data Object Model, dynamic application of CSS rules to page elements, browser's support for XML, object-oriented PHP programming, server side graphics generation, web services.
CT 440 - Computer Graphics for Gaming
Fundamental concepts dealing with the display of graphic information on semi-interactive storage tube displays. The course includes techniques for hidden line display, hidden line removal, and two- and three-dimensional transformation.
CIT 448 - Mobile Game Development
Students will work in teams to develop games for mobile devices. Emphasis on mobile development tools, techniques, cross platform development, and standard practices, using open-source software.

The integrated nature of the educational experience enables students to combine their IT skills with the intellectual flexibility needed to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. It also prepares students to be effective communicators able to interact with clients, coworkers and managers.

Internship Opportunities

Internships are available to seniors in the bachelor’s degree program as part of their capstone project. Some of the employers for internships include: Marshall University’s Department of Information Technology, Marshall University’s College of Education, Strictly Business Computer Systems, Marshall University Office of Communications, Intellipoint Systems, AFO Studios, Lasso Games and State Electric Supply.

Computer information and technology students at Marshall have been in great demand by employers. A recent survey of Marshall graduates found that all found employment in the field within six weeks of graduation or began pursuing advanced degrees. Reported starting salaries for the graduates averaged $44,100.
