How to Handle Stress in College

Let’s be real — stress is inevitable in college. Between classes, homework, exams and trying to balance it all with a social life and new experiences (and the occasional setback), you’re bound to feel overwhelmed sometimes.

Here are some tips we’ve found helpful:

  • Get organized: Use whatever helps you stay on track, whether it’s a planner, a calendar app or even good old sticky notes.
  • Don’t skimp on sleep: What the experts say is true — sleep is fuel for your brain. And according to the National Sleep Foundation, we need at least 7 hours of shuteye, which is increasingly important when we’re stressed. Remember: All-nighters are tempting, but you’ll focus better if you’re well rested.
  • Move your body: Hit the Rec Center, take a walk, join a fitness class or throw a mini Taylor Swift dance party in your room. A quick movement break can do wonders for your mind and body.
  • Stay connected with family and friends: During especially stressful times, it’s important to reach out and connect with others. Give your family a call, meet up with a friend for coffee or even send a quick text to let someone know you’re thinking of them.
  • Use campus resources: There are plenty of available options at Marshall to help you handle stress! The Counseling Center offers therapy groups, one-on-one counseling and local and online resources. At the Wellness Center, you can attend workshops and programs tailored to promoting positive mental health, including guided, personalized wellness plans.
