
Marshall University’s Themed Communities offer students a unique opportunity to live among peers who share similar interests, fostering a supportive and engaging residential experience. These communities are designed to enhance both academic and personal growth through shared activities, events, and resources.
Students can request a community when completing the housing agreement.

Available Communities for First Year Students:
🎨 Art & Music Community
Located in First Year North, this community welcomes students passionate about the arts. Open to all majors, residents collaborate with their Resident Advisor to shape the community’s focus each year, exploring various artistic and musical interests.
💼 Business Community
Situated in First Year South, this community is ideal for students interested in the business world. Through collaboration with the Lewis College of Business, members—regardless of major—can deepen their professional networks and business knowledge.
🎮 Gaming Community
With options in First Year North, Towers East and Towers West, these communities bring together gamers of all levels. Residents can enjoy tabletop and online games, participate in genre-specific discussions, and connect via the MU Gaming Community Discord server.
🎓 Honors Community
Located in First Year South and Willis Hall, these communities are exclusive to students accepted into the Honors College. They offer experiential and collaborative learning opportunities, linking academic, residential, and social aspects of college life. 🎬 Movies Interest Community
Located in First Year North, this community is for movie lovers eager to engage with fellow film enthusiasts. Open to all students, the community’s focus is shaped annually based on residents’ cinematic interests.
🌲 Outdoor Pursuits Community
Found in First Year North, this community invites nature enthusiasts to explore West Virginia’s natural beauty. Activities range from hiking and climbing to relaxing in hammocks, catering to students eager for outdoor adventures.
🩺 Pre-Health Professions Community
Found in First Year South, this community supports students pursuing healthcare careers, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and veterinary studies. Residents can form study groups and build a support system with peers and faculty.
🧪 Science Community
Situated in First Year South, this community caters to students majoring or minoring in science fields. Members can participate in study groups, hands-on experiences like touring the on-campus Crime Scene House, and enjoy activities such as making nitrogen ice cream.
🤝 Student Support Services (SSS) Community
Also in First Year South, this community assists students’ personal and academic development, particularly those in the TRIO program for income-eligible, first-generation college students. Shared academic classes and resources help members navigate campus life.
