What Does “First-Generation” Mean?

Being a first-generation college student means that neither of your parents or guardians has completed a bachelor’s degree.

We understand that being first can be tough, but we’re here to help you succeed. We have a large First-Gen community that includes students, faculty, staff and alumni. We are here to encourage, support and celebrate you along your journey.

Marshall has a lot of different resources for first-generation students. A lot of the staff are first-gen and I think it is really important that the staff understands what you are going through and how confusing it can be.
