The Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum’s 2020 Black History Month poster competitions are open this semester. There is one competition open to all West Virginia K-12 students, and another competition open to all Marshall University students. The theme is “African Americans and the Vote.”

The Marshall University School of Music will present “Music of This Century,” a faculty recital by trombonist Dr. Michael Stroeher and pianist Dr. Johan Botes at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, in Smith Recital Hall.

The Marshall University School of Music resumes the lecture series MUsic Mondays at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at the Cellar Door, 905 3rd Ave. The 2019-2020 series, titled “The B List,” will explore composers whose surnames begin with “B,” culminating in the Fall of 2020 with an all-Beethoven series to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

Marshall University faculty members Dr. Alexander Lee, tenor, and Dr. Henning Vauth, piano, will present art songs by composers from around the world, including the U.S., Germany, Italy, France and Russia.

Tickets are available for the Friday, Sept. 20, ceremony to honor five graduates of Marshall University’s W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications (SOJMC) who are being inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

Deborah Bradley, director of the Marshall University Choral Union, is inviting all interested choral musicians to sing in Choral Union this semester, which has rehearsals at 7 p.m. Mondays in Room 150 of Smith Music Hall. The second rehearsal will be Sept. 9.

Marshall University’s School of Art and Design has kicked off the Fall 2019 semester with two new art exhibits. Marshall’s Birke Art Gallery opened “Material Differences,” a four-person art exhibition, Aug. 26 inside Smith Hall. Following approval from the Marshall University Board of Governors during its summer meeting today at Glade Springs Resort, the university is a step closer to takeoff for its aviation degree programs.

Marshall University will host the Huntington Summer Music Festival Friday and Saturday, June 21-22, at Pullman Square, featuring music from world-renowned and local jazz musicians as well as a Biergarten, an instrument petting zoo for children and people of all ages, and other activities.

Students from Marshall University’s public radio station, WMUL-FM, received awards recently in The Hermes Creative Awards 2018-2019 competition and the 25th Annual Communicator Awards 2019 Audio Competition.
