Two Marshall University students have been named recipients of the Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan. Sponsored by a variety of contributors, the awards of $2,500 are administered by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese and are designed to promote study of the Japanese language, literature, and culture.

Steve Little, a Master of Forensic Science student at Marshall University, was awarded the Robert L. Johnson Academic Scholarship from the International Association for Identification’s (IAI’s) Johnson-Whyte Memorial Foundation Scholarship Fund.

When Brennan Amaral decided to come to Marshall University, he did not realize he would have the chance to possibly save a complete stranger’s life. But when the university held its annual DKMS Bone Marrow Donor Drive last spring, Brennan figured if he could potentially make a difference, it was something worth doing.

Students in the Weisberg Division of Computer Science in Marshall University’s College of Information Technology and Engineering have teamed up with students at St. Joseph Catholic Schools to participate in the VEX Robotics Competition. The first year was so successful that students at the grade school and middle school levels advanced to the World Championship earlier this month.

Marshall University student Steven Straley has been chosen as one of 15 recipients of the Gilder Lehrman History Scholar Award. He will be presented the award at a ceremony in June in New York City.

Kelsi White, a sophomore double major in Japanese and International Affairs, has won a Boren Scholarship for International Study.

Sophomore Christian Thompson, a double major in international business and Japanese, has become the fifth Marshall University student to win a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS).

Marshall University student Aaron Roberts has won a scholarship to conduct summer research in Germany. The DAAD-Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) program matches students through a competitive process with host institutions or laboratories in Germany.

A Marshall University junior has received a Mayo Clinic Summer Research Fellowship through the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Mary Piaskowski, a biological sciences major, was selected from over 1300 applications for one of 140 spots. Piaskowski, a Proctorville, Ohio native, will receive $6,000 for the fellowship.

Seventeen Marshall University students have each been awarded $750 plus expenses through a university program started this year to promote undergraduate research and creative activities.
