Biography

“My name is Safiyyah Mitchell. I was born in Miami, FL, but raised here in Huntington, WV. I chose Marshall because I was also offered athletic and academic scholarships. Plus, I fell in love with the energy and size of the campus.

I chose MUSOP shortly after attending preview day. I applied and was chosen to interview to become a part of the MUSOP family. During my interview, I gained more insight on what an amazing opportunity it would be to go to school here. I was able to interact with the staff/ professors, who were extremely kind and seemed hungry to ignite the minds of young pharmacy students. I knew then this was the place for me.

During my time here as a student I was involved in APhA, ASHP, and CPFI. I also had the opportunity to work in the outpatient pharmacy known as Marshall Pharmacy in Cabell Huntington Hospital across the street from the university.

During my APPE year, I was blessed with an abundance of learning opportunities and experiences. My favorite APPE has to be my international healthcare elective rotation in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. Aside from the long flights to and from, I was able to emerge myself in a different culture and learn how pharmacy (role of the pharmacist, treatment options, etc.) varies depending on location. It was truly an experience I believe everyone should have. I also loved my Heme/Onc rotation at SMMC. I learn more hands on, so being able to round, look at patients (in person/ EMR), and conversate with the medical team really helped with my learning process. Overall, I believe my APPE rotations provided a well-rounded mix of experiences to prepare me to be a pharmacist.

My next stop after graduation is being a PGY1 resident at CAMC in Charleston, WV. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to broaden my knowledge base and grow more as a person and a pharmacist.”
