Federal student aid regulations are changing beginning July 1, 2026, which may affect loan eligibility, borrowing limits, and program availability for students and families. The Office of Student Financial Assistance is actively updating policies, systems, and communications to reflect these federal changes. We encourage you to review official information from Federal Student Aid while updates are in progress: https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/big-updates. If you have questions about how these changes may impact your financial aid, please contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
Financial Aid Guidance
For every year you’re enrolled, you need to file the FAFSA by October 1. It’s free and can be completed online.
Upon receipt of your FAFSA by the FAFSA Processing System (FPS), some of the information on your FAFSA will be checked with federal agencies to confirm that you meet basic eligibility requirements.
We offer scholarships, including merit-based awards for freshmen and transfer students, automatically considered upon admission, plus additional private scholarships through the Marshall University Foundation.
To be eligible for federal loans, you must be enrolled at least half-time.
The enrollment criteria listed on this page is used to determine your eligibility for various financial aid programs.
The U.S. Department of Education mandates that federal financial aid only covers courses meeting degree requirements for your program. We have updated our systems to track this.
To be eligible for Summer Financial Aid, you need to request it in March after you have registered for courses.
You can receive financial aid for a Marshall University-sponsored study-abroad program if the credits apply toward your graduation requirements.
