HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) — On April 15th, West Virginia University traveled to Jack Cook Field for a nine-inning battle against the Thundering Herd.

Fans were excited to see this in-state matchup back for another year on the diamond. Marshall fan Charles Adkins said, “I just enjoy the competition in-state. It’s just cool to have the rivalry, it’s a big rivalry and always has been.”

Marshall student Jacob Ingram said he loves the matchup because he “hates” WVU and “loves” Marshall.

WVU fan Natalie Keeton said she has the best of both worlds when it comes to this baseball battle. “ I live in Huntington and I went to school at WVU,” she said.

Despite baseball, soccer, tennis and various other sports, football continues to dominate most fans’ minds. Despite those odds, the Herd and the Mountaineers haven’t faced each other in football since 2012, and some fans are hoping a football matchup will one day return.

Ingram said when it comes to this rivalry, “there’s nothing I would love more than if Marshall played WVU in football.”

Keeton said when Marshall and WVU used to play each other in football, it was a lot of fun for students and the community.

Unfortunately, despite leading most of the game, Marshall fell to the Mountaineers, 5-4, after WVU’s Chase Swain stole home in the ninth inning.

Marshall and WVU baseball will once again face off at GoMart BallPark on Wednesday, April 30.
