HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Baseball Team took on the South Alabama Jaguars in a three-game series that marked one of the last conference series for both team. The Herd (20-22) came into the game after scoring a season-high 32 runs against the Morehead State Eagles in a 32-15 win that marked a two-game series sweep for Marshall. Meanwhile, the Jaguars (17-21) came to Jack Cook Field following a series win over the Texas State Bobcats including a 10-2 victory in the closeout game.

A doubleheader began on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch after Friday’s game was moved. Game one was all Marshall, as the Herd took a commanding 7-2 lead by the bottom of the fifth despite the Jaguars beginning the game with a two-run home run courtesy of Rett Johnson. The Herd kept its foot on the gas scoring three more runs for an eventual 10-2 win that ended in the seventh.

Marshall scored runs on a three-run home run by Ethan Murdoch as well as multiple wild pitches and two singles by Maika Niu. The true star of the game for the Herd was pitcher Bryce Blevins who threw eight innings giving up just four hits and two runs while earning his fourth win of the season.

Game two was a much more drawn-out affair, seeing the Herd take a 4-2 win in a series clinching game. Marshall was led by Elijah Vogelsong who managed an RBI single that scored Eddie Leon, as well as a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that put the Herd up by two runs. This game was truly one of pitching and defense as Marshall’s infielders and outfielders put on a show with a double play early and a perfect fielding percentage.

Three Marshall pitchers saw time on the mound as Griffin Miller and Charlie Krebs finished with a 2.62 and 2.45 ERA, respectively. Closer Nicholas Weyrich was the late game star, as he pitched a single inning facing four batters and striking out two of them, including a strikeout of the Jaguars final at bat to seal the win.

With the series already in hand the Herd came out looking for the sweep on Sunday. The Herd ended the game with a 4-0 shutout for a series sweep. The scoring for Marshall began in the third with an AJ Havrilla single that scored Nolan Wilson and a Niu grounder that scored Cam Harthan. The Herd picked it up again later with runs in the sixth and seventh via singles from Harthan and Murdoch that scored single runs.

With the series sweep the Herd advance to over .500 on the year and hold a five-game win streak. Marshall will wrap up its third and final game of the season against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday when it travels to GoMart Ballpark with the first pitch being tossed at 6 p.m.
