HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall University Softball Team closed out its regular season Friday with a triple-header series sweep over the visiting Georgia State Panthers.
Marshall destroyed Georgia State in all three victories at Dot Hicks Field, beating the Panthers by a combined score of 35-5. No game of the series went the full distance as Marshall won game one in six innings, and games two and three in five.
Game one originally started on Thursday and game three was originally slated for noon on Saturday, but storms across the tri-state this weekend caused all three games to be played on Friday as it was the only day without rain in the forecast.
Game one saw Marshall ahead big before the weather put a pause in the game until the next day. Prior to the cancellation, Marshall was up 6-2 in the middle of the fifth inning after a Diamond Leslie three-run home run capped off a six-run bottom of the fourth inning for the Thundering Herd. Once game one was resumed on Friday, Bub Feringa hit a home run to resume the Thundering Herd’s offensive attack from the night before. Kasia Parks and Brooklyn Ulrich each had hits in the bottom of the sixth inning which gave Marshall the run-rule victory in game one.
Game two was much like game one as Marshall kept the offensive attack going and never let up against the Panthers. In the first inning of play, Senior Rielly Lucas hit her 15th home run of the season, which tied Bella Gerlach for eighth all-time in a single-season in program history. The Thundering Herd run-ruled the Panthers yet again, winning game two 10-2 in just five innings
Game three saw much of the same from the Thundering Herd offensively as it again run-ruled the Panthers in five innings. Marshall’s Jules King pitched well in game three, throwing a complete game shutout. King struck out six batters in all five innings of work for the Thundering Herd. Haleigh Adkins was the offensive hero in game three as she drove in six runs with a grand slam and a two-RBI triple.
Marshall will be back in action Thursday as it awaits its next opponent as the two-seed in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship Tournament, which is being hosted by Troy University. The Thundering Herd will face the winner of No. 7 Coastal Carolina and No. 10 Georgia Southern in the second quarterfinal of the day at 2 p.m. ET.
