HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Men’s Soccer Team hit the pitch for the fourth time this year at Hoops Family Field. The Herd hosted the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in its first conference game of the season, and Marshall fans were not disappointed.

Scoring began in the 33rd minute as Keaviano Francis found the feet of David de la Vibora for Marshall’s first Sun Belt Conference goal of the season. Just eight minutes later in the 41st, defender Rai Pinto would attempt a penalty following a foul on the Chanticleers Joaquin Suarez. Pinto scored to give the Herd a 2-0 lead; however, the Chanticleers didn’t give up, scoring in the 42nd minute on a Jaland Larmond goal.

The second half saw Coastal apply pressure near the end of the game to get past the Marshall defensive line. However, goalkeeper Dan Rose came up clutch with two saves in the last six minutes of play to keep the Herd afloat.

Marshall players were issued three cards throughout the game. First was a yellow card on Joao Alves in the 36th minute. Near the end of the game with just six seconds to play, Marshall’s Joao Roberto was issued a yellow followed by a red being issued to Herd defender Braian Amaro. The scuffle marked the first red card issued to a Marshall player this season.

The Herd gutted out its first Sun Belt Conference win, but many tough tests remain.

Marshall will travel to Richmond, Va. this coming Wednesday to face VCU at 7 p.m.
