HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — Marshall softball opened its fall schedule with a dominant 20-0 victory over West Virginia State on Sept. 20 at Dot Hicks Field.

The emphatic win gives the Herd strong momentum heading into a busy stretch of fall exhibitions. The victory also marked the debut of new pitching coach Drew Calloway, who is paving the way for the continued growth and development of Marshall’s pitching staff this fall. Calloway said this win “was a good first step” and “was a good set for them to attack these next couple of weeks”.

One of the key returners stepping back into the circle this fall is junior pitcher, Jules King. King emerged last spring as a reliable arm for the Herd, making 31 appearances with 16 starts during her sophomore campaign. Her experience and workload have made her a cornerstone for Marshall’s rotation.

King stepped into the circle this past weekend and said “the way they dominated the zone” on Saturday is something the team will carry into the rest of the fall season.

This fall also marks the start of her first season working under the new pitching coach, giving King the chance to adapt to a fresh coaching style and unfamiliar approaches on the mound. King said working with Coach Calloway has “been refreshing” and its nice “having a new voice that comes in and truly cares.”

Marshall also retains four other pitchers on their roster. Calloway said his main focus preparing for fall has been gaining trust within his team, as he said, “I want to do just as good as anyone else.”

As the fall schedule starts to unfold, Marshall softball has plenty to build on from its dominant opener. With several home games still ahead and road matchups against Ohio and Miami (Ohio) on the horizon, the Herd will face a mix of competition that offers valuable opportunities for growth. Between returning experience in the circle and fresh energy on the coaching staff, this fall offers a glimpse of what is to come for Marshall softball heading into the 2026 season.
