HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Women’s Soccer Team (5-4-1, 1-1-1 SBC) hosted the Arkansas State Red Wolves (2-2-4, 0-1-2 SBC) on Saturday night.
The scene was straight out of a movie as it was a beautiful, clear skies senior night for the Thundering Herd.
The Herd looked to get to six wins on the year, which would double its total wins from last season. Similarly, this victory would get Marshall to two Sun Belt Conference wins in just four games this season, doubling the amount of SBC wins for the Herd in the entirety of last season as well.
Marshall came out fast and kept the pressure on the Red Wolves, but eight shots and six corner kicks weren’t enough to get the Herd on the board. The Herd was applying so much heat on the Red Wolves that a goal constantly felt like it was coming.
Finally, with just 1:32 left in the first half, Marshall’s Fernanda Dantas would step back for her seventh corner of the game. She would put an out-swinging ball just over the out-stretched hands of Arkansas State’s goalkeeper, Damaris Deschaine, for a Marcella Alves header into the back of the net. The Herd would go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The second half would start as a spitting image of the first as Marshall would continue bearing down on the Red Wolves. Dantas would get another chance at a corner kick and would score an extremely rare Olimpico as she curved the ball over the Arkansas State goalie and directly into the net, giving the Herd a 2-0 cushion.
Arkansas State needed to flip the script and start putting pressure on the Herd, but it could never get its offense going. Dantas would get her second assist of the night with less than five minutes left as she crossed the ball to Tiggi Gent, who would finish it off with a beautiful bicycle kick goal.
Marshall dominated from start to finish and earned a dominant 3-0 senior night victory. The Thundering Herd defensive line, led by seniors Angel Fowler and Kajsa Ekstrom, did such a phenomenal job that freshman goalie Katie McCutcheon did not need a single save en route to her clean sheet.
Marshall looks to make it three wins in a row on Thursday at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
