HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — A gorgeous October night saw the Marshall Women’s Soccer Team host Old Dominion University in a pivotal conference game for both squads.

Neither team found a goal as it ended in a 0-0 draw highlighted by penalties and physical play. The game saw 24 total fouls given out including three yellow cards, two of which were handed to the Herd.

Regardless of physicality, the Herd put on a good showing, particularly on defense, as it aggravated a potent ODU offense who managed 17 shots but only registered three on goal. Emma Durand played in net for the Herd and had a stellar performance with three saves and multiple game changing grabs as she played out of the box. One of her saves came late in the 87th minute to keep ODU off the board.

Marshall’s best in Bailey Fischer and Fernanda Dantas were mostly taken out of the game by an Old Dominion defense that marked Marshall’s goal and assist leaders for most of the match. The same can be said for the Marshall defense as it focused on ODU’s Riley Mullin and Yuliia Khrystiuk heavily throughout the game.

The Herd’s own Angel Fowler had a standout game in defense, setting the tone for the Herd with physicality and multiple clearances near the box. Fowler led a defensive line that finished the game with its fourth clean sheet of the season, its third with Durand in goal.

The draw isn’t the result head coach Rafa Simoes wanted but should give Marshall some momentum heading into its next contest on the road against South Alabama (4-1-1) on Friday. The Jaguars are currently sitting at number two in the West division table, trailing only Texas State who is still undefeated in conference play.
