HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) – On Tuesday, the Marshall Thundering Herd wrapped up its preseason schedule with an exhibition game against the Davis & Elkins Senators. Marshall looked to continue shining as it came off an impressive 123-63 win over Alice Lloyd last week.
These two teams faced off in the regular season last year, which was the first time the two teams had faced each other in both of their respective histories. Marshall went on to win that game 90-57. It was the first win at Marshall for second-year head coach Corny Jackson.
It would be a slow start for both teams, but Marshall would regain control and get out to a 14-point lead at the break, 46-32.
The Senators would come out quick as they cut the lead to 10 and looked to have some momentum. However, Marshall would get on many runs to enlarge the lead. The Senators would have many scoring droughts, with one of those droughts being no field goals for over 6 minutes of game time.
Marshall would have a strong second half and pull away to a 90-62 win. Marshall had some great games from a couple of its newcomers this season. Matt Van Komen had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Bryce Slay put up 11 points with Drew Fuquay tagging along with 15 points. Lastly, Wilson Dubinsky had 14 pts and six rebounds with three three pointers.
Marshall will open their season on Monday in Amherst, Mass. as it take on the UMASS Minutemen, tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
