HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Women’s Basketball Team is back at the Cam Henderson Center Thursday as the Northern Kentucky Norse make the short trip east to take on the Herd.
Marshall aims to keep the momentum going to start the season as it is coming off a 53-39 victory over the Buffalo Bulls at home Monday.
Marshall Freshman Olivia Olson led the attack for the Thundering Herd, scoring 14 points with a 4 of 8 night from behind the arc. Olson also played well on defense as she stole the ball away from the Bulls three times throughout the 24 minutes she played in the contest.
Ni’Kiah Chesterfield and Kassie Ingram also played well offensively, contributing 11 points each during the game.
Marshall also played well defensively, forcing 26 turnovers against the Bulls, along with out-rebounding the Bulls 43-37. Blessing King was a major contributor to Marshall’s edge in grabbing boards as she finished the game with 11 rebounds.
By only allowing 39 points against Buffalo, the Thundering Herd matched a record it set back in November 2022 against Purdue Fort Wayne.
The Norse opens its season against the Herd Thursday. The Norse were picked to finish sixth in the Horizon League Preseason Standings after finishing last season 11-21 and 8-12 in Horizon league play.
Senior guard Mya Meredith was the lone player for the Norse selected to a preseason All-Horizon League Team, earning First Team honors.
The Norse escaped with a win in the last time these two squads matched up with a three-point buzzer beater shot that put the Norse up over Marshall 80-78.
The Thundering Herd looks to continue to start the season off strong and go to bed still undefeated before heading to Bloomington, Ind. on Nov. 11 to take on the Indiana Hoosiers at the historical Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Thursday’s game will be broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM and online at Stream 1 on www.marshall.edu/wmul. FM88 Sports’ Nate Courtney and Ethan Patrick will be on the call with pregame coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. and tip-off at 6 p.m.
