HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Men’s Basketball Team took to the floor of the Cam Henderson Center for its first home regular season game yesterday. Marshall (3-0) entered the contest with back-to-back road wins against UMASS and Toledo, it’s first win against the Rockets since 2017. Meanwhile, Elon (2-1) came to town with a home win against Belmont Abbey and an overtime win on the road at UNC Greensboro.

The Herd beat the Phoenix 96-89 on the back of an elite scoring performance from Wyatt Fricks. Fricks finished the evening with a career high 34 points, nearly going perfect from the field shooting 92%; his only missed shot came from beyond the arc. Jalen Speer narrowly missed posting a double-double finish with nine points and dishing out 12 assists.

Marshall’s Matt Van Komen played well against his former school despite some first half struggles. Van Komen finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six blocked shots while shooting four-for-four from the charity stripe. Guards Noah Otshudi and Caleb Hollenbeck also had stellar games. Otshudi finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. While Hollenbeck netted a new career high in three pointers in his young Marshall career, going four of seven from beyond the arc and finishing with 13 points.

Andrew Fuquay rounded out Marshall’s group of five double-digit scorers with 10 points, five of which came near the end of the first half to bring Marshall back in front. The rest of the Herd squad saw valuable defensive minutes disrupting the Phoenix’s momentum throughout the second half. The bout was highlighted by the scoring battle between the aforementioned Fricks and Elon’s Chandler Cuthrell, who finished with 28 points.

A massive win for the Herd seems to indicate a great season ahead.

Marshall is back in action with its hardest test of the season on Saturday when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., to face the Virginia Cavaliers in Marshall’s only game against a power four school this season; tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
