HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Thundering Herd (18-11) will host the Old Dominion Monarchs (10-19) this evening as the Herd looks to get a late season win with seeding implications on the line.
Marshall’s last outing saw the Herd struggle from the bench against Coastal Carolina in a 79-75 loss.
Marshall’s backcourt duo of Jalen Speer and Noah Otshudi were the only Herd players to make it into double figures with 39 and 18 points respectively.
No other Marshall player managed to muster more than Landen Joseph’s seven points, essentially putting the two guards on an island as the only scoring threats of the night.
Despite struggles from the Herd, the closeness of the contest should be noted as a fire was likely lit under the feet of coach Corny’s Herd.
The Monarchs are a different story. In a season of woes, the team from Norfolk, Va. will look to gain a statement win going into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament against one of the conference’s top teams.
The Monarchs dropped their last game against Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, 86-81. Old Dominion saw four players hit double figures, three of which had over 15 points, and were led by Ketron Shaw’s 18.
Turnovers were the tale of the tape with ODU giving it away 19 times, and the Golden Eagles 26 times.
Despite the win in turnover ratio, the Monarchs failed to capitalize, marking their tenth conference loss of the season.
Regardless, both teams are looking to turn up the heat come tournament time and this game is simply a stepping stone in that direction. Marshall will welcome Old Dominion to the Cam Henderson Center with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
