Morgantown Softball Wins First Ever State Title

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM)- History was made in the Morgantown high school softball program on Thursday afternoon, as the Mohigans captured its first ever state softball title, defeating University 8-0 in the WVSSAC Class AAAA State Championship game at Little Creek Park in Charleston, W.Va.
The Mohigans despite having the disadvantage of the No. 4 vs No. 2 matchup, dominated the Hawks from beginning to the end, in the matchup of schools from Morgantown.
The Mohigan bats came alive early, scoring two runs in the opening frame with Carolina Mallow hitting a blooper into left field. The scoring continued in the third with Carper Messerly crushing an RBI triple into left field to score Madi Stone to give the Mohigans a 3-0 lead.
Morgantown sealed the deal at the back end of the game, scoring five runs across the fourth through sixth innings.
University showed a little bit of life in the first inning but stranded two runners on base.
Leading the Mohigans to victory was starting pitcher Madison Wisemam going 6.1 innings, allowing just five hits and two walks.
The Mohigan’s proved that it was the best team in the Class AAAA bracket, as it did not allow a single run throughout the entirety of the tournament. This dominate stretch included wins against top-seeded Cabell Midland, George Washington, & Hurricane.
The victory adds to what has been a successful academic year for Mohigan’s athletics as it adds yet another championship to its trophy shelf, joining the football team that won the state title back in the fall.
With the victory, Morgantown finished the season at 26-10, while University finished at 29-7.
