After opening the 2026 season with a 2-1 record at home during the Marshall Invitational, Marshall volleyball faced a new challenge in Indianapolis.
The Herd went 3-0 at the Hampton Inn Invitational, defeating the Akron Zips 3-0 on Thursday, Sept. 3, followed by a 3-1 victory over the IU Indy Jaguars on Friday, Sept. 4, before finishing the weekend with a 3-2 win over the Youngstown State Penguins on Saturday, Sept. 5. The three victories moved Marshall to 5-1 on the young season and gave the Herd its first three-match winning streak of the year.
More than just the wins, the weekend gave Marshall an early chance to prove how it could respond when faced with adversity. The Herd opened the tournament against Akron and immediately found itself in a competitive battle with the Zips.
Marshall eventually came away with a 32-30 victory in the opening set before gaining control offensively and taking the second set 25-17. The Herd then closed out the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third set.
Emma Barnett and Logan Henderson each recorded 11 kills, while Appalachian State transfer Maddie Smith added 10. Graduate student Beatrice Ciccarelli continued her strong start to the season with nine kills, five blocks and a .571 hitting percentage.
For second-year head coach Heather Stout, the victory meant more than simply opening the weekend with a win.
“Really proud of our group and how we responded tonight and cleaned up the areas we talked about from last week,” Stout said during the postgame press conference. “It’s a testament to trusting our training and buying into the process.”
That ability to respond became an important theme throughout the weekend and helped set the tone for Marshall’s time in Indianapolis.
The Herd’s second match against tournament host IU Indy provided another test. Marshall claimed the opening set 25-18, but the Jaguars answered with a 25-20 victory in the second.
Marshall responded by taking the third set 25-22 before battling through a tight fourth set. With the score tied at 24-24, the Herd scored the final two points to earn a 26-24 victory and secure the 3-1 match win.
The victory featured four Marshall players reaching double figures in points and three finishing with double-digit kills. Stout credited the team’s veteran players for stepping up when the match reached its most important moments.
“Proud is an understatement,” Stout said. “This was a gritty win, and this group continues to show just how much belief they have in each other and in what we’re building.”
Ciccarelli once again made her presence felt at the net, while Henderson provided another physical threat offensively.
“Our seniors continue to show up when we need them most,” Stout said. “Cicca has been commanding the net like it’s hers. Logan Henderson brings a physicality that she can unleash in the biggest moments.”
Youngstown State provided the Herd with its toughest test of the weekend, pushing Marshall all the way to a deciding fifth set.
Marshall won the opening set 25-22, but the Penguins answered by taking the second set 25-20 and the third 27-25. The Herd suddenly found itself one set away from its first loss of the weekend and dropping to 4-2 on the season.
Marshall responded by taking the fourth set 25-23 and forcing a fifth and final set. The deciding frame remained close throughout, but the Herd stayed composed late. With the score tied 13-13, Marshall scored the final two points to win 15-13 and complete the comeback.
Ciccarelli led the way with 17 kills and four blocks, while Smith finished with a team-high 18 kills. Henderson and Barnett also provided key offensive contributions as Marshall closed out the weekend with its most competitive victory of the season.
For Stout, the final match was a reflection of what Marshall had shown throughout the entire tournament.
“Great weekend for us. Proud of this group and their will to fight,” Stout said.
Stout also highlighted the impact of Marshall’s middle blockers and how their presence continued to create opportunities for the rest of the offense.
“Our middles are impacting the game so well on both sides of the ball, and their presence continues to open things up for Maddie,” Stout said.
The three wins showed Marshall’s ability to find different ways to win and demonstrated the potential of the Herd moving forward.
Against Akron, Marshall had to battle through a marathon opening set before pulling away. Against IU Indy, the Herd answered after dropping the second set. Against Youngstown State, Marshall overcame a 2-1 deficit and won a deciding fifth set to finish the weekend undefeated.
That resilience could become valuable as the season continues and conference play approaches.
Marshall entered Indianapolis following a 3-0 loss to Ohio in the final match of the Marshall Invitational. Instead of letting that result define the beginning of its season, the Herd responded by winning three consecutive matches away from home.
Now, Marshall will carry that momentum into another challenging weekend on the road.
The Herd will travel to Durham, North Carolina, next weekend to take on the Duke Blue Devils on Friday, Sept. 11, before facing Belmont on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Marshall left Indianapolis with a perfect record, but perhaps more importantly, the Herd left with proof that it can respond to adversity and find a way to win in different situations
