Marshall women’s soccer spent the final hour of Sunday’s match chasing an equalizer, but even with a player advantage, the Herd could not find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to App State at Hoops Family Field.
The Mountaineers struck early, with Ellie Garrison heading home a corner kick from Aleesia Ambrosio in the 13th minute to give App State a 1-0 lead. Marshall goalkeeper Emma Durand made three saves to keep the Herd within striking distance, but the visitors carried their advantage into halftime.
Marshall’s opportunity to turn the match around grew in the 34th minute when App State defender Lucy Harrington received a red card following a review, forcing the Mountaineers to play with 10 players for the remainder of the contest. The Herd looked to take advantage of the extra space, but App State’s defense continued to keep Marshall off the scoreboard.
Marshall increased its attacking pressure after halftime, finishing the match with 10 shots and three shots on goal. App State managed 11 shots and four on target, while both goalkeepers finished with three saves. However, the Herd struggled to turn its chances into the goal it needed to get back into the match.
The closest Marshall came to finding an equalizer arrived in the closing minutes. Luana Gusmao put a shot toward goal that struck the inside of the post, leaving the Herd just inches away from tying the match. The opportunity slipped away, and App State held on for the 1-0 victory.
The defeat marked Marshall’s first home loss of the season and its second straight match without scoring. Despite the setback, the Herd remained sixth in the Sun Belt Conference standings with 12 points entering the final match of the regular season. With four teams sitting within one point behind Marshall, the final match carried added importance for the Herd’s postseason position.
Marshall will look to finish the regular season on a stronger note when it travels to face Coastal Carolina on Sunday, November 1, with a chance to secure its place in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
