HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Chanticleers (32-13) made the trip up from Conway, S.C. for an Easter weekend conference series against the Herd (23-19).

The first matchup on Thursday night was an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel, with Marshall’s Bub Feringa and Coastal’s Nicolette Picone keeping the opposing teams scoreless through three innings.

The Chants were able to break open the scoring in the top of the fourth, as senior second baseman Keirstin Roose hammered a two-run shot over the left field wall. That swing of the bat would be all the scoring that the first game had in store, as Picone struck out nine and gave up six hits and three walks in a complete game shutout.

The long-bombing Herd took over in game two on Good Friday, as Marshall hit four home runs on the way to a comeback victory. The Chanticleers would get four runs in the third inning off a Roose fielder’s choice RBI and a three-run dinger by senior catcher Maddy Jennings, but the Herd would score six unanswered to win 6-4.

Two of the Marshall long balls came from sophomore Haleigh Adkins, who had three of the six Herd RBIs. Catcher Abby Darnley and first baseman Rielly Lucas tagged on solo-shots of their own.

The Saturday series rubber match was all Coastal Carolina through six and a half innings, as the Chants led 5-0 going into the bottom of the last frame. Two of the five runs came from Roose once again, but the Herd defense fell off in the series deciding matchup, leading to two of the five runs it conceded being unearned.

It appeared as if the tables had turned in the bottom of the seventh, as Ramey George, a hometown hero sophomore from St. Joseph High School in Huntington, picked up a bad to enter the lineup card as a pinch hitter. With two women on base, George roped one over the left field wall, bringing Marshall within two and giving the Thundering Herd a dying chance.

Unfortunately for the almost sold-out Dot Hicks Field crowd, Marshall came up short and the Chanticleers headed back home with a 5-3 series-clinching win and a 2-1 series victory.

This series allows Coastal Carolina to jump ahead of Marshall in the Sun Belt Conference standings, putting the Chants in soul position of fourth place at 11-7 in the conference. Meanwhile, Marshall is tied for fifth at 10-8 in the SBC.

The Thundering Herd will look to regroup as it sets to host Radford University (26-21) for a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday. You can tune in to both of Tuesday’s matchups on 88.1 WMUL-FM or online at marshall.edu/wmul/.
