HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) —  The Marshall University Men’s Soccer Team added to its winning streak Wednesday evening as it shutout the visiting South Carolina Gamecocks, 4-0, at Hoops Family Field.

Marshall and South Carolina were deadlocked at 0-0 through the first 30 minutes of play until David de la Vibora opened up the scoring for Marshall with an unassisted strike in the 31st minute of action.

The goal by de la Vibora gave Marshall the 1-0 lead for the time being, but that was short lived, because just six minutes later in the 37th minute, Freshman Gabriel Stevenato netted the second goal of the half for Marshall with a header off a corner kick from Yasha Schaerer to extend the Herd lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the halftime break, and already up two, most would think that Marshall would simply be in keep away mode, but that was far from the truth. Rai Pinto added to the Marshall lead just two-and-a-half minutes into the second half by blasting a free kick from outside the box that crept right past the left post and the Gamecock goalkeeper to make it a 3-0 lead for the Herd.

Marshall then added yet another point to the board in the 77th minute as Carl Romberg scored off an assist by Takahiro Fujita to make the score 4-0.

With the victory, Marshall extended its win streak to five-straight.

Marshall is now 8-1-4 on the season, and 4-1-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. It is probable that Marshall will move up even higher in the United Soccer Coaches Poll come Tuesday’s new rankings, pending its result against Old Dominion this weekend in Norfolk, Va.
