HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — Marshall Women’s Basketball started its second season of the Juli Fulks era right with a 53-39 win over the Buffalo Bulls.
This was the first time the two teams had met since 2004, as the squads battled in the SBC-MAC showdown.
Marshall would get out fast and build up a 15-point lead in the first quarter, 22-7, thanks to a mix of turnovers from Buffalo and good rebounding by Marshall.
Buffalo would fight back as the herd would get cold and get outscored 11-9, and it would be 31-18 going into the break.
The second half is where Marshall struggled a lot last year, but that would not be the case in this game. Marshall scored 14 points with a couple of threes to pull away again.
The bulls got some traction, but the wheels started spinning too late as Marshall would hold on to a 53-39 win.
Marshall played superb defense, forcing 26 turnovers and getting 16 points off of them. 39 points is also the lowest Marshall has held a D1 team to since Nov. 22, 2022.
Freshman Olivia Olson scored fourteen points, going 4-8 from three. Blessing King grabbed 11 rebounds, and Ni’Kiah Chesterfield and Kassie Ingram got 11 points apiece.
Marshall will be back at home again this Thursday to face Northern Kentucky. Tip-off is set for 6 pm.
You can tune in to Thursday’s matchup on 88.1 WMUL-FM and online at Stream 1 at www.marshall.edu/wmul. FM88 Sports’ Nate Courtney and Ethan Patrick will be on the call with pregame coverage at 5:30.
