HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — Last night was cool and dreary as the sun set early on the Herd’s final home game at Hoops Family Field. Marshall (8-2-5) came into the contest with the possibility of hosting Sun Belt conference tournament games. The UCF Knights (7-5-2) came to town on a hot streak, undefeated in the month of October and aiming to continue their streak into the tournament.

The Herd got off to an early start with goals by Carl Romberg in the 11th and 15th minutes. Both of Romberg’s goals came from just outside the top left side of the box as the German native stunned the Knights early.

Despite some great runs by the Knights’ attack, they were unable to finish on the backs of a great performance in goal by Eddie Demarco. Demarco allowed no goals and had three stellar saves to keep Marshalls lead untouched.

Both teams played a physical game, notably Ryan Holmes for the Herd put his shoulder down multiple times as he plowed into UCF defenders and made sliding tackles to prevent runs. The Marshall defense was stingy all night, only allowing three shots on goal all game for the Knights, which meant they couldn’t build any sort of attack.

Despite the win, Marshall’s bid to host the Sun Belt Tournament fell short as WVU finished the night with a 2-1 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks in Colombia. Luckily for Herd fans, the two hosts for the tournament WVU and UK are within an ear shot of Huntington, making the trip simple.

Marshall returns to action on Sunday in Morgantown at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown as the Herd take on the #6 seed Georgia State Panthers at 7 PM.
