HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) —The Marshall University Women’s Basketball Team (7-3) started yet another winning streak Saturday as it defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes (4-6) 70-62 inside the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall was hot coming into the mid-afternoon meeting with the Golden Flashes, as the Thundering Herd were winners in four of its last five games and played arguably its best game of the season against Coppin State in its previous game.
Kent State was struggling coming into the game, losing three of its last four games. This included the Golden Flashes’ dropping to previous opponent, Sun Belt Conference member Arkansas State, 74-54 in the Bahamas.
The game began in a lead-changing frenzy, as the lead changed eight times in the opening 10 minutes of action, including five in the first half of the quarter. Even with the game being close to start, Marshall settled in quite well and ended the quarter on a 7-0 run that spanned 1:56.
Marshall continued its offensive takeover to start the second quarter by extending its 7-0 run all the way to a 15-0 run. The run and lead were extended with a Meredith Maier made three-pointer that turned into a four-point play for the senior as she was fouled on the shot and was able to convert the and-one opportunity on the ensuing free throw. Marshall forward Leyocha Marigney then added to the Herd’s run and lead with a second-chance layup after grabbing a Peyton Ilderton missed three-point attempt. Kassie Ingram capped the run with a layup of her own to give Marshall its biggest lead of the game at 14.
Marshall stayed in control for much of the quarter. However, while Marshall was making shots at the beginning of the quarter, the back half was all Kent State. The Golden Flashes accounted for seven of the nine makes heading into halftime after Kent State finally got out of its scoring drought at the 7:21 mark with a Corynne Hauser field goal.
At the break, Marshall was ahead 31-25. Coming out of halftime, Kent State maintained its momentum from the end of the first half and turned what was once a 14-point deficit into a razor-thin two-point margin heading into the final frame.
Kent State was able to take a slight lead during the period, going ahead by two points at the 1:56 mark; however, Marshall recovered and regained the lead at the :38 mark. That would be the last time the Golden Flashes were ahead of Marshall during the contest.
The fourth quarter was all Thundering Herd. Kent State kept the game close until the end, not allowing Marshall to be up by more than 11 during the quarter, but the Herd did everything to stay just ahead of the Golden Flashes and emerge victorious in the contest.
With the win, Marshall begins another winning streak, now winning its last two games in a row and improving to a 7-3 mark heading into a non-conference game against Davis & Elkins on Thursday.
With the loss, Kent State dropped to 4-6 overall and lost its third straight game against a Sun Belt Conference opponent this season. The Golden Flashes will have one more opportunity to get a win against an SBC opponent on Feb. 7, when it hosts a Sun Belt school for the final rendition of the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge this season.
