Plan of Study

The Graduate Catalog requires each graduate student to submit a plan of study in their first semester, before registering for their 12th graduate credit hour in the program. The plan should list all the courses that will count towards degree requirements and the term when each course was taken or will be taken.

Many programs have a custom plan of study form for the requirements of the program. Ask your advisor if there is a specific form you should use. There is also a general Plan of Study Template (PDF) available online.

Once the student and advisor have signed the plan of study, the form goes to the office of the student’s academic college. If the form was completed as a PDF, the advisor should email the form to the college office. The college updates DegreeWorks to ensure the student’s plan is reflected correctly there.

The academic college office then sends it to the Registrar’s office by email. The Registrar’s office files the plan of study into Banner and updates the student’s record to show that a plan of study is on file.

Graduation

How to apply for graduation

  • Until the deadline to apply for graduation, Marshall University offers students the ability to apply for graduation online. By logging into myMU, students can fill out the application and pay the commencement fee at the same time.
  • After the application deadline has passed, students can first pay their graduation fee at the Bursar’s office, and then submit the
Dynamic Form Application to Graduate online.

All PDF or paper applications to graduate are outdated. They have been replaced with the process above.

Employee Tuition Benefit

The tuition benefit for Marshall employees is now processed through the Classified Staff Council. They use an electronic form; please do not complete the paper form any longer.

Adding a Second Program

Some students wish to pursue one or more certificates at the same time as their graduate degree, or pursue multiple degrees.

To make this request, simply complete a new Graduate Application for Admission and indicate you would like to add the second program in addition to your current program. It is possible to add more than two degrees or certificates using the same process.

  • There is no application fee for adding a second program (certificate or degree).
  • Marshall will use any official copies of documents we have already received. You will not need to send a second copy of documents in our possession.
  • The admissions requirements for the second program apply. For many certificates, students who are already enrolled in certain degree programs are automatically qualified to enroll in the certificate.
  • The Graduate Admissions office will coordinate review of your application by the academic department. In many cases, especially with certificates, this review is very fast and routine.
  • Graduate Admissions will add the additional program to your record in Banner based on the admission decision from the academic department.
