NASA Guidance on the Use of Generative AI in Proposals and Reports

NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) currently does not prohibit the use of Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in proposal preparation or award reporting. However:

• NASA discourages unacknowledged AI-generated content
• Proposal teams remain responsible for the accuracy and authenticity of all submitted materials
• Use of AI tools must be properly cited in proposal references
• Sensitive or export-controlled information subject to ITAR or EAR regulations must not be uploaded into publicly accessible AI systems

Required AI citation information includes:

1. Name of the AI tool
2. Version number
3. Date/time used
4. Description of how the AI tool was used

Professional human writers contributing to proposals or reports must also be acknowledged.
