NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) currently does not prohibit the use of Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in proposal preparation or award reporting. However:
- NASA discourages unacknowledged AI-generated content
- Proposal teams remain responsible for the accuracy and authenticity of all submitted materials
- Use of AI tools must be properly cited in proposal references
- Sensitive or export-controlled information subject to ITAR or EAR regulations must not be uploaded into publicly accessible AI systems
Required AI citation information includes:
- Name of the AI tool
- Version number
- Date/time used
- Description of how the AI tool was used
Professional human writers contributing to proposals or reports must also be acknowledged.
