The mission of the opportunity
Specifically, you want to confirm the goals of the organization providing the opportunity align with your own. For instance, some awards will fund students who are pursuing a research career in medicine, but not students who are interested in practicing clinical medicine. A distinction like this is absolutely something you’d want to keep in mind.
Check that the deadlines are feasible (it is NOT a good idea to start two weeks out or *gasp* the night before), and that you’re willing to complete the required materials. Some awards also require you to work with the foundation after winning the award, so again, you want to make sure that that kind of work aligns with your professional goals.
