HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — Marshall Women’s Basketball made the short trip to Morehead, Ky. yesterday where the Herd lost to the Morehead State Eagles.
This was the 51st meeting between the two squads as the Thundering Herd led the all-time series 28-22 with the last matchup coming two seasons ago for a 67-64 victory for the Eagles.
Marshall was on a three-game win streak coming into the contest and was 5-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Eagles were 2-4 and looking to rebound after a loss to Eastern Kentucky University.
Both teams started cold as they were even at 33.33% field goal percentages and 15 points apiece at the end of the first period.
The game remained tight, but MSU junior Anja Ekstrom hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left before halftime to give the Eagles a 28-25 lead heading into the locker room.
Morehead caught fire to start the second half, hitting three treys en route to a 44-32 lead just over four minutes into the third.
The Eagles were up 12 with all the momentum going into the last period.
Morehead State got out to the largest lead of the game for either team, 56-42, just over a minute into the fourth quarter. However, Marshall was finally able to find the bottom of the net and bring the game within five points with less than four and a half minutes to go.
The Thundering Herd went cold once again and ended the game just one for its last nine shots from the field while hitting none of its last seven field goal attempts. This opened the door for Morehead State to defend its home court with a 66-56 victory.
Freshman Olivia Olson was Marshall’s leading scorer with 12, but she was just 5-21 from the field. Behind her was the senior duo of Peyton Ilderton and Timaya Lewis-Eutsey with nine points each. Lewis-Eutsey, Marshall’s leading scorer on the year who was averaging 15 points per game coming into the matchup, only played 18 minutes in the contest.
Graduate Student Kate Dike, who is Morehead State’s only returning player this season, led both teams with 18 points. Anja Ekstrom was right behind her with 17, 15 of them coming from three-pointers. Lastly, Marie Sepp played an all-around astounding game with nine points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds.
This loss drops Marshall to 5-3 on the year and it looks to rebound on Wednesday in Baltimore as it heads to take on the 1-7 Coppin State University.
