Alternative Certification Program

Overview

Interested in Marshall University’s Alternative Certification program for those who want to teach, but do not have the teaching license?

If you meet the West Virginia Department of Education standards, you may be eligible to begin the alternative certification program at Marshall University.

Here are the steps:

  1. Receive and accept an eligible teaching position offer from your West Virginia county. Check the eligibility requirements at West Virginia Alternative Certification FAQ.
  2. Complete the IHE form (your county will help you with this) and pay the fee.
  3. Once WVDE approves your application, apply to Marshall University as a non-degree seeking student, and pay the fee.
  4. Once you are accepted to Marshall University, complete the registration forms for the current semester (these will be sent to you each semester).
  5. Complete the courses for that semester. You can log into your courses at Marshall University Online Learning. Your invoice will be emailed about a month after the semester is completed.
