Thanks to the generous support of the Historic Glenwood Foundation, the Graduate Humanities Program is pleased to announce the Kemp W. Winfree Memorial Scholarship. Kemp Winfree (b. 1942) was a former Vice President of the Marshall University Graduate College and the Executive Director of the Historic Glenwood Foundation until his passing in 2024. He was instrumental in forming a lasting public-private partnership with the Graduate Humanities Program, its faculty and students. In 2014, he facilitated the formation of the Glenwood Center for Scholarship in the Humanities, which augmented the support for faculty and student research on the Glenwood estate and its relationship to the history of Charleston and the Appalachian region. In his role as Executive Director of the Glenwood Foundation, Winfree took great pleasure in assisting the work of Graduate Humanities Program students.
The Kemp W. Winfree Memorial Scholarship is available to admitted students pursuing their MA in Humanities, with an emphasis on topics related to the Glenwood estate, its relationship to local and regional history, or the promotion of Glenwood’s mission for education and outreach, broadly defined. Current students (with 3.0 GPA minimum) are eligible to apply for up to two years ($2500 per year). If applicable, scholarships will be renewable after the first year pending acceptable performance determined by the Glenwood Foundation’s scholarship committee (consisting of representatives from both the Glenwood Foundation and the Graduate Humanities Program). Awardees will be expected to generate measurable deliverables each semester while working under the scholarship, which should lead to the production of a research or creative output at the end of the scholarship period. (Applicants working on a two-year project will be required to submit a progress report to the Glenwood scholarship committee after the first year.)
The Director of the Graduate Humanities Program will issue a call for scholarship applications at the beginning of each spring semester. Awardees will be notified by the end of the spring semester and start in the fall semester.
Questions about the Kemp W. Winfree Memorial Scholarship — including about how individuals can donate to the scholarship fund — should be addressed to the Director of the Graduate Humanities Program.
