Marshall University’s School of Art and Design will open its creative studios to tourists and travelers from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, during the inaugural West Virginia Craft Week.
Both Huntington facilities—the Visual Arts Center at 927 Third Ave. and the Art Warehouse at 201 21st St.—will be open to the public and feature information about and demonstrations of art history, ceramics, fibers, graphic design, photography, painting, printmaking and sculpture.
Additionally, work from internationally recognized artist Anila Quayyum Agha will be featured in the Visual Arts Center Gallery, while multimedia musician Mark Snyder, currently on his Appalachian Tour, will perform in the gallery at 2 p.m.
The 10-day, statewide West Virginia Craft Week is a part of American Craft Week and sponsored by the Tamarack Artisan Foundation.
“West Virginia is known throughout the country as a mecca for fine arts and crafts, and we remain a national leader in supporting and promoting the people and products that are uniquely ours,” said Alissa Novoselick, executive director of the foundation. “For our residents and travelers in our state, American Craft Week is a wonderful opportunity to support West Virginia’s creative economy and capture a fascinating glimpse of the creative process.”
CRAFT, Craft Retailers and Artists for Tomorrow, founded American Craft Week six years ago to spotlight American crafts and encourage travelers to discover and experience the work of artists throughout the United States. Participating artists open their studios to the public for all or part of the designated week or show their work at local galleries or retail facilities.
