College of Business to kick off Professionalism Month

The Marshall University Lewis College of Business will host a series of events throughout the month of March to promote professionalism in the workplace.

The 2nd annual Professionalism Month will commence with a kickoff celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, in the Corbly Hall lobby on Marshall’s Huntington campus.

Glen Midkiff, director of stakeholder engagement for the college, said in today’s business world, graduates need more than technical skills to land a job.

“Employers are searching for the complete package when hiring one of our students,” Midkiff said. “When our graduates exhibit professionalism, they have higher rates of success and contentment in their careers. Professionalism is not all about how you dress for the job or having the right degree; it is shown in the way a person acts when she or he is around others who are present in the workplace.”

Students will have the opportunity to attend an etiquette dinner, resume-building workshops and various networking activities throughout March. Participants who attend at least five of the scheduled events will receive a 2016 Professionalism Certificate from the Lewis College of Business, according to Dr. Nancy Lankton, a professor in the college.

“We have joined forces with Marshall’s Career Services office and our student organizations to help every Marshall student learn beyond the classroom and gain the skills necessary to become a well-rounded, marketable professional,” Lankton said.

In addition to the Lewis College of Business and Marshall’s Career Services, event sponsors include Alpha Kappa Psi, the American Marketing Association, Beta Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Pi, the Center for International Programs, JulNet Solutions LLC and the Society for Human Resource Management.
