Registration underway for five-week summer K-12 program

Registration is now underway to enroll students in grades K to 12 in Marshall University’s five-week-long summer K-12 program at Elk Elementary Center in Charleston.

The classes will run from June 13 through July 14 with the theme “Many Cultures, Just One World.” Students will have the opportunity to become actively involved with hands-on activities. Counseling and social skills training will also be available.

The program runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday with breakfast and lunch provided for those under 18.   Participants will be scheduled for an orientation session from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on either Wednesday, June 9, or Thursday, June 10.

The program is designed to provide children under 18 with activity-based learning experiences in writing, reading and math, according to Dr. Sandra Stroebel, associate dean and coordinator of the summer program.

All children are evaluated upon entry into the program and academic interventions are geared toward each student’s needs. Upon request, children will be provided with more in-depth psychoeducational testing.

The program utilizes supervised graduate students in clinical experiences leading to certification or licensure in special education, school counseling, and school psychology, Stroebel said.  The cost for each child is $100 and tuition assistance is available if needed.  This program is for all students, including special education students.
