FAM 2021-2022

Thank You for Choosing Marshall University!

The minute you get to campus, you already have a Friend-At-Marshall (F.A.M.!) ready to help you face the challenges ahead. We know that the transition to college can feel a little intimidating, and we are here to help. Your F.A.M. will be there for you throughout your freshman and sophomore years. Transfer students — we got you covered as well!

F.A.M. is our Peer Mentoring program that puts you in contact with a caring sophomore, junior or senior who will help you get a adjusted to campus, answer any questions you might have, and point you to any resources you might need.

You can contact your F.A.M. by email, text, phone, virtually or in-person.

FAMs Like You

Our FAM Peer Mentors represent a wide range of students, including students who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, students who come from foster care, students who are neurodivergent, and students who are parents of young children. Each of these student populations enriches our Marshall family.

The default for assigning FAMs is to match the First-Time Full-Time Freshman or new Transfer student with a Peer Mentor in their major. Students can also request to be matched with a FAM who has experience navigating college from any of the fifteen perspectives below:

  • Commuter
  • E-campus Student (assigned automatically)
  • First Gen student
  • Homeschooled student
  • International student
  • Marshall for All Students (assigned automatically)
  • Metro or Non-Resident student (out-of-state)
  • Military-connected student (enlisted, veteran, child of a veteran)
  • Minority at a PWI (primarily white institution)
  • Neurodivergent student (a student with autism, ADHD, OCD, someone whose mind works differently)
  • Non-traditional student
  • Student Athlete
  • Student who has been part of foster care/kinship care
  • Student who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Student with young children
  • Student with the same major as me (default)

If you would like to be matched with a FAM who might be better able to relate to you, please click here to make that request.
