University WiFi
Res Life: Connectivity on Campus
Marshall University is committed to providing a reliable Wi‑Fi experience across campus. While wired connections are recommended when available for better speed and stability, Wi‑Fi offers convenient mobility. Wireless performance may vary due to:
- Shared Access
- Peak usage times
- Device Differences
- Signal Positioning
For residence hall students, the MU HRL network supports smart devices that do not use username/password authentication by creating a private User Defined Network (UDN), allowing connections for game consoles, smart TVs, streaming devices, and approved guests
Connect Worldwide with eduroam
Marshall University Information Technology (MUIT) participates in eduroam (education roaming), a secure global Wi‑Fi service designed for the research and education community. Through eduroam, Marshall students, faculty, and staff can use their Marshall credentials to securely connect to wireless networks at participating colleges, universities, libraries, and research institutions in more than 100 countries worldwide. Visitors from participating eduroam institutions can also connect to the eduroam network at Marshall University using credentials from their home institution.
eduroam uses industry-standard authentication and encryption technologies to provide secure wireless access while helping protect user credentials. Authentication is handled through a user’s home institution, allowing seamless connectivity without creating guest accounts or obtaining temporary access. While on campus, Marshall students, faculty, and staff may continue to use MU WiFi as the primary wireless network, with eduroam available for both Marshall users and visitors from participating institutions.
