20 challenges, including 20 multi-title challenges
On March 11, the Rockingham County School Board (VA) voted to remove six books from school libraries, including The DUFF. School Superintendent Larry Shifflett cited a school policy barring “sexually explicit content” as justification. A reporter covering the meeting noted the banned books were about Black and LGBTQIA+ youth, persons with disabilities, and teenage pregnancy. These books were among 57 titles the board suspended from use in early 2024 because they were flagged on a partisan book rating website. The March bans brought the number of books banned in the district to 19, with most of the remaining titles still suspended while awaiting review.
