2011
Challenged at the Easton (PA) School District, but retained despite a parent’s claim the book promotes “economic fallacies” and socialist ideas, as well as advocating the use of illegal drugs and belittling Christians. Removed from the Bedford (NH) School District’s required Personal Finance course after two parents complained about the “book’s profanity, offensive references to Christianity, and biased portrayal of capitalism.” A checklist has been proposed that Bedford school officials would use to rate books and other instructional materials. The nonfiction account is about Ehrenreich’s struggles to make a living on multiple minimum-wage jobs in America.
2010
Restricted minor’s access in the Topeka and Shawnee County (KN) Public Library because the organization Kansans for Common Sense contended that the material is “harmful to minors under state law.” Later the board voted 6-3 in favor of adopting a staff recommendation to keep the books where they are currently located on the shelves in the library’s Health Information Neighborhood section.
2004
Criticized as the book chosen for UNC at Chapel Hill summer reading program (2003) by Republican state lawmakers, citing a “pattern” of the university being anti-Christian.
