The week of May 16, Florida’s attorney general and education commissioner sent a letter threatening legal action against the Hillsborough School District if it did not remove 55 titles from school libraries. The school removed all of the books, including Storm and Fury. On July 24, Broward School District (FL) administrators also ordered the removal of these titles from all school libraries, threatening disciplinary action for noncompliance. Other districts throughout the state followed suit, often significantly exceeding the list specified in the Hillsborough letter. During a meeting, John Palmerini, lawyer for the Orange County School Board said, “While I disagree with [the Board of Education’s] determination that these books are pornographic as the law defines it … I think it would be perilous for this board to allow these books to remain on the shelves.” Not one of the thousands of books censored by Florida school administrators during 2025 were determined to meet the statutory definition of material harmful to minors.
