Banned Books 2009 – Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

Marshall University does not ban books! The information is provided to let people know what has been banned/challenged elsewhere.

2026

19 challenges, including 19 multi-title challenges.

In 2025, Wicked was removed from the school districts in Tooele, Davis, and Washington Counties in Utah. This triggered a statewide ban of the book from all schools as required under Utah HB 29 (“Sensitive Material Review Amendments”), bringing the total to 22 books banned throughout the state over complaints in a handful of counties. The complaints in Tooele County came from an individual who is neither a staff member nor the parent of a student. On January 6, 2026, the ACLU of Utah filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of provisions of HB 29 on behalf of two high school students; the Kurt Vonnegut estate; and authors Elana K. Arnold, Ellen Hopkins, and Amy Reed.
