To: Members of the Marshall University School of Nursing Community,

Amid the dynamic circumstances surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19), the health, safety, and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and patients remain our top priority at all times.

We are also committed to our student’s education and are working with the University, WV Board of Nursing, and our national accreditation agency to ensure our teaching, clinical instruction and evaluation methods are appropriate for course completion and graduation.

The School of Nursing is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Huntington and the surrounding area, as well as at our distant sites. The plan below is subject to change as the COVID-19 situation evolves.

Classes

The plan at this time is for classes to meet in person in the fall (excluding online classes and virtual classes). Students will be required to wear masks at all times while in class.

Clinical

  • The School of Nursing will provide Pre-Licensure BSN students with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including masks and face shields for use in the clinical area. If the clinical agency does not provide PPE for Family Nurse Practitioner students, students in this program may request PPE from the School of Nursing.
  • We hope to be able to allow Pre-Licensure BSN students to pre-plan the night before clinical as we have in the past (excluding clinical that does not require pre-planning). This situation is still fluid and we will know more closer to the beginning of the fall semester.
  • Facilities may require students be fully vaccinated prior to allowing students in the facility. We are in discussion with our clinical agencies and will let students know when this decision is made. In the meantime, the School of Nursing encourages students to get vaccinated in case this decision is not made by the agencies until the beginning of the fall semester.
  • Students and Faculty will be required to check and document their temperature and complete a checklist regarding COVID symptoms before each clinical and lab day.
  • While completing clinical experiences at Marshall University, no undergraduate students will be assigned to patients who are at-risk, have a test pending or have tested positive for COVID-19.
  • For ongoing clinical in the MSN Program, students and faculty are asked to adhere to the clinical sites COVID-19 procedures.

{To nursing students and faculty participating in clinical or project-based experiences at Cabell Huntington Hospital or St. Mary’s Medical Center:

Mountain Health Network which includes Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center is requiring all students and faculty to be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus by October 30, 2021. The term “fully vaccinated” refers to:

  • Two (2) weeks after receiving the second vaccine dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.
  • Two (2) weeks after receiving a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine

This means you need to have completed the vaccine series by October 16, 2021! And submitted a copy of your vaccination card to musonstudentrecords@marshall.edu by Monday, October 18, 2021.

University Health and safety officials have collaborated with the Cabell-Huntington Health Department to make FREE COVID-19 vaccinations available to Marshall students and employees through walk-in clinics in Cabell County. No appointments are necessary and there is no charge. See Vaccination Clinic schedule at https://www.marshall.edu/coronavirus/return-to-campus-fall-2021/testing-and-vaccine-information/   Marshall University is currently administering only the Moderna vaccine. This vaccine requires 28 days between the 2 shot series.

Exceptions may be granted for medical or religious reasons. The exception forms are attached to this email. These forms must be sent to Jo Andrea Watson at joandrea.watson@mhnetwork.org by September 21, 2021. In the subject line of the email put “Clinical Rotation COVID vaccine Exception Request” and mark high importance.  Where it asks for supervisor name put: Dr. Denise Landry

Any student/instructor granted an exception will be required to undergo regular asymptomatic testing for COVID-19 no less frequently than one (1) time per week. See https://www.marshall.edu/coronavirus/surveillance-testing/ for information about COVID-19 testing.

If you are already vaccinated and have not already done so, send a copy of your vaccination card to musonstudentrecords@marshall.edu
Please complete these requirements as soon as possible. Failure to do so could jeopardize your progression in the nursing program.}

Volunteer opportunities

  • Blood donation – With the COVID-19 outbreak, hundreds of blood drives have been canceled and blood donations have been severely affected. Students are encouraged to contact the American Red Cross for ways to help.
  • Helping neighbors and family members – Reach out to your neighbors and family members who are at higher risk of serious infection if contracting COVID-19. Offer them assistance in shopping for groceries, prescriptions, or other necessities during this time of social distancing and isolation.
