Online learning at Marshall University offers all-online undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificate programs.

Our purpose is to prepare registered nurses to become advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in a variety of healthcare settings, particularly in rural and / or underserved communities. Our nursing master’s program also prepares future APRNs for leadership roles in administration and education. If you choose our program to pursue your M.S.N. degree or your online M.S.N. degree, you will graduate with the healthcare leadership skills to qualify for roles like a family nurse practitioner, a nurse midwife, nurse educator, nurse administrator or a psychiatric mental health nurse. Located in Huntington, West Virginia, our graduate nursing program has been accredited since its beginning in 1953 and is currently accredited through Fall 2026 by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

The M.S.N. program offers five (5) areas of emphasis:

Family Nurse Practitioner – This program can prepare you to enjoy more career autonomy, equip you with the expertise to treat patients across the lifespan and help increase your earning power. This is a competitive nursing graduate program preparing graduates to be independent mid-level primary health care providers. Graduates will be prepared to sit for the AANPCB or ANCC certification exams.

Nursing Administration – This program will prepare you to gain the necessary expertise and leadership skills to direct and administer healthcare policy in hospitals and agencies, as well as increase your earning power. This online M.S.N. program will prepare you to sit for certification exams if you choose to seek certification.

Nursing Education – This program is a competitive program preparing graduates to be independent educators and leaders in nursing education. If you choose this online MSN program, you will increase your earning potential and become prepared to sit for the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) certification exam.

Nurse Midwifery – The Nurse Midwifery curriculum is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to assume the role of a certified nurse-midwife in a variety of clinical settings pertinent to nurse midwifery care.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – As a student in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, you will take courses in substance and relationship abuse, pharmacology and therapeutics, geriatric and child nursing as well as courses related to research and leadership styles in nursing. Upon successful completion of the program, Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioner graduates are eligible to take the ANCC Certification Examination for Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioners.
